{"id":47511,"date":"2025-10-25T09:55:30","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T06:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thereporterethiopia.com\/?p=47511"},"modified":"2025-10-25T09:55:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T06:55:30","slug":"mounting-tensions-in-southern-tigray-stir-alarm-among-addis-ababas-raya-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thereporterethiopia.com\/47511\/","title":{"rendered":"Mounting Tensions in Southern Tigray Stir Alarm Among Addis Ababa\u2019s Raya Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Raya community residing in Addis Ababa have sounded an urgent appeal over what they describe as \u201cdeteriorating security and human rights situation\u201d in the southern zone of Tigray.<\/p>\n<p>A gathering held earlier this week in Bole Sub-City called for immediate action from the federal government, the interim Tigray administration (TIA), and the international community.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued following the meeting, which includes a list of 10 resolutions, said the people of Raya\u2014renowned for their \u201cdeep-rooted cultural values, peaceful coexistence, and industrious nature\u201d\u2014are now facing \u201csystemic marginalization, repression, and violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It accused the current interim administration and members of\u00a0 the Tigray People Liberation Front\u00a0 (TPLF) leadership of committing \u201carbitrary detentions, disappearances, killings, and mass displacement\u201d in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation must not be militarized,\u201d one participant said during the discussion. He referred to reports that more than a dozen schools and vocational training centers in the area have been turned into military camps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur children deserve classrooms, not barracks,\u201d he added. The attendee underscored that the community demands for the immediate withdrawal of security forces from educational facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The resolutions echoed the participants\u2019 voices. The statement called for the \u201curgent and unconditional reinstatement of self-administration for the Rayan community,\u201d describing it as a right guaranteed under both the Tigray and Ethiopian constitutions.<\/p>\n<p>Another participant said the community\u2019s peaceful call for self-rule had been met \u201cnot with dialogue, but with violence and repression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gathering urged authorities to hold accountable all those responsible for alleged crimes against civilians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose responsible, whether members of the interim administration, military elites, or the former ruling party, must face justice,\u201d reads the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The participants further called on security forces in Tigray to \u201cuphold the principles of protection and service to the people\u201d and to reject political manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not oppose the security apparatus,\u201d a community member clarified. \u201cBut we demand that it serves all Tigrayans equally and distances itself from those who incite conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concerns about migration were also raised, with several speakers noting that young people from Raya were leaving the country due to insecurity and lack of opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur youth are risking their lives in the Mediterranean because they see no future at home,\u201d an elderly man said, urging the international community to address the crisis and invest in youth-centered development programs.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting reaffirmed support for the full implementation of the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, lamenting that \u201cthree years have passed without meaningful repatriation of IDPs or restoration of Tigray\u2019s territorial integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The community also expressed solidarity with political parties operating in Tigray, encouraging them to continue peaceful and democratic efforts despite \u201cchallenging and repressive conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its closing remarks, the community statement appealed to the federal government to exercise its \u201cconstitutional responsibility and authority\u201d to protect the people of Raya from what it called \u201csystematic atrocities\u201d committed by regional actors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a declaration of hostility,\u201d one community member in his mid-thirties emphasized. \u201cIt is a call for justice, accountability, and inclusive governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe suffering of our people cannot be ignored any longer,\u201d the statement concluded, portraying the growing frustration among the Raya community in Addis Ababa as tensions continue to mount in southern Tigray.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the Raya community residing in Addis Ababa have sounded an urgent appeal over what they describe as \u201cdeteriorating security and human rights situation\u201d in the southern zone of Tigray.
